  1. CNES’s OSTM/Jason-2 oceanography satellite mission marks its 10th year in orbit

    On 20 June, the OSTM/Jason-2 mission (Ocean Surface Topography Mission) will mark its 10th year in orbit. Initially intended for a three-to-five-year mission, the satellite is still operating after twice its design life. It has completed 47,000 orbital revolutions of our planet, acquiring measurements of unequalled precision from more than 300 million radar pulses.

    Thursday 10 August, CNES was with NASA at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena to mark the 25th anniversary of the launch by Ariane of the TOPEX/Poseidon ocean altimetry satellite. On this occasion, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall met JPL Director Michael Watkins to reflect on the successes achieved in 25 years and to pave the way for closer space cooperation between France and the United States.

    The Indian SARAL satellite was placed into orbit Monday 25 February from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in southern India. The satellite is carrying AltiKa, a new-generation radar instrument developed by CNES to tell us more about Earth’s climate.

  8. SARAL/AltiKa to enhance understanding of Earth’s climate

    The French-Indian SARAL/AltiKa altimetry mission is scheduled to launch 25 February from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in southern India. Its goal is to enable closer monitoring of sea-surface height from space.

    High-precision satellite altimetry to improve our understanding of the oceans and their role in climate change dates back to 1992. For it was then that the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite was launched—the result of close cooperation between CNES and NASA. In order to mark this 25th anniversary, on 7 September 2017 the CNES welcomed a large delegation from NASA and the JPL to the Toulouse Space Centre in France.
